Cutting Hair on Wigs or Rooted Mohair
A Step by Step with Pictures!
Here is our cute rooted head.
This is curly mohair rooted into a
vinyl head.  The hair is dry and combed down.
Notice the head is sitting on a champagne bottle.  This bottle is
nice and heavy and provides a stable place to out the head for cutting.
The first step is to wet the hair with warm water.  This is saturated and dripping wet.
Always cut hair before blushing since the head is going to get wet several times.
Spray the head with a conditioner,
you can see the bottle in the background.  After I ran out of this, I just filled the bottle with water and added some regular conditioner.  Spray liberally, and comb with a slightly wider tooth comb.  Comb from the top middle all the way around.
Now grab your regular scissors and trim the hair all the way around.  This head is trimmed to the middle of the ears, to the bottom of the head in the back and to the eyebrows (or where they would be) in the front.  From the ears to the eyes, it's angled up.
This is your 'baseline'.
Comb a section of the hair in the back and pull it up toward the top of the head.  Notice I left the back bottom layer of hair down.  I'm saving the length.  After you cut this section do the same all the way around the head like shown.  Use the other cut sections as a guide so all the hair is cut to the same length.
When you finish layering the hair, (that's what you were doing in the last step), it's time to get the thinning shears.
Pull the hair up the same way as you did to layer it.  This time, angel the thinning shears so you save the length in the back and get shorter near the top of the head.  Cut twice, and with the shears closed, slide the shears out of the hair.
Do this all the way around the head as shown.
This is what you get when you're done.  Turn the head upside down over the sink and shake it a bit to get the cut hairs out and wet it down again.
Comb the hair and look for long pieces and places that you feel are still too long, trim with the thinning shears for a wispier look.
Tossle that hair with your hands and pick up with your fingers.
Feel free to trim a bit on the top is you feel it's too long.

This hair is curly but straight hair will be cut the same way for a baby look.
